the that walks on the ground

The bat that walks on the ground

The bat has long wing.
The bat thought like a mouse.
This little bat scuttles about the forest floor like a mouse.
Before people arrived in NZ bat were the only mammals living on the land.
Then its uses forearms as front legs it has a large claw on its thumb and claws on it's feet too.  These help the bat to dig, climb trees and walk along branches to look for food.
The bat sleeps in hollow trees or in a hole that it digs in rotten wood.
In Winter the bat hibernates for short periods.
A Young bat is called a pup.  Pups can fly when they are four to six weeks old.
Short Tailed bats are in danger of becoming extinct.
Rats & stoats climb trees so they can get into the bats tree hollows and eat them while they are sleeping.
The bats live on Little Barrier Island, Codfish Island, Fiord land, and remote forests in North west Nelson & the central North Island.
DOC carry out predator control in forests where bats live.  They use special traps to catch pests that can kill the bats.
